The KU Tuition Grant (KUTG) helps support recruitment/retention efforts, as well as assisting graduate students achieve their educational goals of earning a KU degree.

Applies to: 

Eligible KU graduate students.

Policy Statement: 

Eligible students must:

  1. have a complete, applicable academic year FAFSA on file by March 1 (students who have incomplete checklists do not have complete files).
  2. have additional unmet need after other gift aid is awarded.
  3. be meeting our standards of Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP). See http://www.affordability.ku.edu/financialaid/sap for more information on SAP.
  4. have an Expected Family Contribution (EFC) equal to or less than 5,000.
  5. be enrolled in a minimum of 6 hours.
  6. be taking classes on the Lawrence or Edwards campuses and be assessed KU tuition. Students who are not assessed KU tuition and, therefore, do not pay tuition out-of-pocket are not eligible for KUTG, including:
  • 100% sponsored students
  • Students who have a TA appointment of 40% or higher
  • Students who have scholarships that specify the scholarship is provided to pay tuition and fees
  • Students who are studying abroad (specific only to the semester they are abroad – if applicable) *See note below about study abroad programs
  • Students who receive the Post 9/11 GI Bill.
  1. The KU Tuition Grant policy is reevaluated on an annual basis. Award criteria is subject to change.


Study Abroad:

Students who are studying abroad may be eligible to retain the KU Tuition Grant if they meet one of the following criteria:

  • Participate in a qualified KU Study Abroad exchange program
  • Participate in a program that involves enrollment in regular KU hours and assesses KU tuition

Award Adjustments:

Changes in enrollment (e.g. dropping a class or withdrawing) may impact KUTG eligibility (e.g. reduce or cancel a KUTG award).

Additional Aid

If a student receives additional gift aid that results in reduced eligibility for KUTG, awards will be adjusted accordingly. In some cases, KUTG may be reduced or canceled, and may result in repayment obligations to the University.


If a student withdraws before the first day of classes, all aid will be canceled and the student must repay all aid, including KUTG. If a student withdraws from all coursework during the term, FAS will follow the withdrawal procedures for non-Title IV funds. Any undisbursed KUTG funds will be cancelled.
