Military Service Scholarship

Policy
Purpose:

During the 2008 Legislative Session, Senate Bill 437 was approved and the Kansas Military Service Scholarship was enacted in a permanent statute. The previous Senate Bill 357, which originated the scholarship, was approved during the 2007 Omnibus Session in a legislative proviso; therefore it was only funded for one year. This scholarship will be available to students who meet specified criteria and will be for the payment of tuition and fees at the institution that they are attending. Eligible institutions include area vocational schools, area vocational-technical schools, community college, the municipal university, state educational institutions, and technical colleges.

REQUIREMENTS OF ELIGIBLE STUDENTS:

Recipients must be enrolled either part-time or full-time, but need to be enrolled in at least 6 credit hours to be eligible to receive the scholarship. Recipients must remain in good academic standing and make satisfactory progress toward completion of the requirements of the education program in which they are enrolled. Priority in awarding scholarship is given to those students with the greatest financial need. Students will need to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and have the information submitted to the school that they are attending, along with the scholarship application form. Any federal military tuition assistance that the student is receiving will be applied first toward the student’s tuition and fees and they will only be eligible for the remaining balance in scholarship assistance. Eligible students may be awarded a scholarship for not more than four academic years of undergraduate study. If the course of instruction requires a fifth year of undergraduate study, a scholarship may be awarded for the duration of the course of instruction. If a student is not enrolled on a full-time basis, a student shall complete the course of study within a reasonable time period based upon the number of hours enrolled in an academic period and computed as a fraction of the total number of credit hours required for full-time enrollment. Continued funding for this scholarship is subject to state appropriations.

A certification statement is sent to KU in the Fall and again in the Spring in order for student to be awarded the amount for tuition and fees for which they are eligible for each semester.
