KUMC Immunization Requirements for International Students, Long Term (≥ 4 weeks)

Policy
Purpose:

To outline specific immunization requirements for Long Term International Students.

This policy will impact the health and safety concerns for students and maintain patient safety.

Applies to:

International Students on KUMC Campus only

Campus:
Medical Center, Kansas City
Policy Statement:

Documentation of the following is required for all Long-Term International Students, defined as those who attend clinical rotations or study at KU for a period of time over four weeks:

  • Completion of the KUMC TB Questionnaire (included on Student Health Requirements Form for International Students – Long Term)
  • Quantiferon Gold TB test upon check in to KUMC
  • Chest X-Ray is required for all students with a positive result on the Quantiferon Gold TB test
  • Tdap (Tetanus/Diphtheria/Pertussis):  Vaccine must be current (within the past 10 years). Td is not acceptable.
  • The following blood tests are required to check for immunity:
    • Measles (Rubeola IgG Antibody)
    • Mumps (IgG Antibody)
    • Rubella (IgG Antibody)
    • Hepatitis B (Surface Antibody, Quantitative)
    • Varicella (IgG Antibody)

A copy of the lab report must be submitted with the application, with English translation.  Lab reports must include interpretative data.  If adequate immunization has not been received by the student prior to the blood tests, the blood tests will show lack of immunity and booster shots may be required.  It is recommended that full immunization be finished before the blood tests are completed.

  • Seasonal flu shot is required if the International Student is attending KUMC during flu season (September 1 through March 30).  Flu shots received outside Student Health will require documentation.
  • Required health statement to be completed by physician or clinician at home institution stating that applicant has been examined and no limitations have been identified.  Abnormalities will be disclosed.
Consequences:

Students who fail to comply with immunization requirements may not be able to enroll for the upcoming term and they will not be able to participate in their clinical rotations.
