Policy Statement:

Senior Citizen Student Information

Students who are eligible for senior citizen rates include non-degree-seeking undergraduate or graduate students who are authorized to enroll on a space-available basis in a regularly scheduled University course. Kansas residents who are 60 years of age or older (senior citizens) and are enrolled as non-degree-seeking students may request a waiver of tuition and Lawrence/Edwards/Medical Center required campus fees.

Senior citizen rates may not be applied to coursework numbered 800 or above. Coursework taken at the senior citizen rate will receive a grade of NE (not evaluated). A grade of NE indicates a course that does not apply towards a degree and cannot be transferred to another university.

Admission and Enrollment

Undergraduate students eligible for senior citizen rates must apply through the Office of Admissions. Graduate students eligible for senior citizen rates must apply through the Office of Graduate Studies. Enrollment of senior citizen students may be limited; see the school to which you have been admitted for details. Students admitted to the University but not a specific school are limited to 6 hours of enrollment per semester. Special requirements may apply to students previously enrolled at KU as degree-seeking and students who have already earned a bachelor’s degree. Contact the admitting office for more information.

Students eligible for senior citizen rates are not permitted to take courses in the schools of Allied Health, Architecture, the Arts, Business, Education, Engineering, Journalism, Medicine, Music, Nursing, Pharmacy, or Social Welfare without permission from the school or department.

University requirements such as instructor and departmental permission are applicable. Restricted entry courses are marked with “Instructor Consent Required” or “Departmental Consent Required”.

Waiver Request form

Students admitted as non-degree-seeking who are eligible for senior citizen rates must request a waiver of tuition and Lawrence/Edwards/Medical Center campus fees using the senior citizen rates request form. Request forms must be submitted to the Office of the University Registrar by the 30th calendar day after the first day of classes for each semester and include proof of age.

A student previously enrolled as a degree-seeking student at the University of Kansas may not enroll as a non-degree-seeking student until completion of an undergraduate degree.

Exclusions or Special Circumstances:

Any Kansas resident 60 years of age or older upon the presentation of sufficient proof of age shall be permitted to audit courses at state universities on a space available basis with no requirement for payment of tuition and fees required of every student as a condition of enrollment.  A person meeting these requirements shall be considered a non-degree seeking student for purposes of K.A.R. Articles 88-29, 29a and 29b.  Special academic fees shall be paid by the student.  All determinations as to residency, the age of the applicant and the space available for the auditing of courses by such persons shall be made by the state university involved.
