Tuition Compact Policy
This policy outlines eligibility for the tuition compact rate, the length of applicability and the exceptions that may alter or extend the current terms. The tuition compact policy was established to provide a fixed tuition rate for entering first-time freshmen.
All Lawrence/Edwards Campus undergraduates
All new Lawrence/Edwards Campus students who have never attended another college or post-secondary institution after high school graduation will be automatically assigned the compact rate when they are admitted to an undergraduate program. A student cannot opt out of the compact rate. This rate will remain in effect for four years, including summers, from the student’s initial enrollment. If the student has not completed their program by the compact rate expiration (four years after starting at KU), the standard tuition rate in effect at that time will be assessed for the duration of their enrollment. In the case of a five-year undergraduate program, see additional information below.
Each year a compact tuition rate based on the four-year average of anticipated standard tuition will be determined for and applied to the students entering that year. Compact tuition rates are set by the Kansas Board of Regents in June for the fall semester of that year. The tuition compact will have resident and non-resident levels. The tuition compact policy does not include housing costs, course fees or campus fees. See these policies for additional information.
A student who leaves KU but returns during the four-year period of the student's compact will continue to pay the same compact tuition rate (see Exclusions or Special Circumstances below). This includes study abroad programs and other educational opportunities that take students away from campus for a semester or more.
Students enrolled in the School of Education or the Master of Architecture Program will pay the compact tuition rate for the first four years and then standard graduate tuition for their post-baccalaureate year.
All students admitted to the PharmD program, whether first enrolled as a new freshman at KU or as a transfer student, pay the compact tuition rate for the four years of the PharmD program. A pre-pharmacy student who enters KU in August will pay the compact tuition rate for that entering freshman class. When the student is later admitted to the PharmD program, the student will be reassigned to the compact tuition rate for the entering class of the academic year the student is admitted to the Pharmacy program. A maximum of four years is permitted for pre-pharmacy at the compact tuition rate for entering freshman and a maximum of four years compact tuition rate is permitted for the Pharmacy (PharmD) program.
Students admitted to KU as part of the tuition compact who are subsequently admitted to a KUMC undergraduate program will continue to pay compact tuition rates until their compact expires.
The compact tuition rate for each student is final after the census date for the semester (20th instructional date). It is the responsibility of the student to review the student's classification rate prior to this date and notify the Office of the University Registrar if an error appears to have been made. If an incorrect classification is not brought to the attention of the Office of the University Registrar until after the census date, the student's classification will not be changed for the semester but may be changed for future semesters.
Students who need to leave KU due to military service, medical emergency, extended medical conditions, a death in the family or similar special circumstances may continue to receive the compact tuition rate if they re-enroll. Individual compact tuition rates may be extended beyond the normal expiration date by the number of semesters that were missed, up to a maximum period of four years (eight semesters) due to such extenuating circumstances. This reenrollment must occur in the four years immediately following the expiration of the original cohort. A student may apply for an exception to the University Tuition Compact Policy by completing an online fee petition with the Office of the University Registrar and providing documentation accounting for time away from the University. Each request will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.
Students who have been granted the compact tuition rate in error will have their tuition rate readjusted up to the 20th day of classes. If the error is discovered or brought to the attention of the University Registrar after the 20th day of classes, the student will pay the compact tuition rate for the current semester and then will have the student's tuition rate adjusted the following semester.
