Domestic Partner Accommodation in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences

Policy
Purpose:

To inform faculty in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences of the guidelines that govern the process leading to the initial employment of domestic spouses/partners within the College.

Applies to:

Faculty of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences

Campus:
Lawrence
Edwards
Policy Statement:

In its efforts to recruit the best possible candidates for tenure-track faculty positions, the College has a tradition of working to accommodate accompanying domestic spouses/partners. The following guidelines should govern any College process leading to the employment of such spouses/partners. These guidelines are offered to guide the process of initial appointments within the College.

1. All candidates for tenure-track faculty positions should be informed, in a like manner, of the College's willingness to entertain requests for employment of spouses/partners and of the procedures involved in that process.

2. Any employment decisions must be based on the needs of the College and of the academic unit in which the accompanying spouse/partner seeks employment. If the accompanying spouse/partner does not have credentials that are compatible with the needs of the College or of the academic unit, then employment in that unit should not be pursued.

3. Any offer of University employment must be contingent on the candidate's qualifications and on the availability of resources. The credentials of any accompanying spouse/partner must be systematically reviewed by the academic unit in light of the current standards of the unit, of the College, and of the University.

Procedures

The following are procedures for the review and appointment of accompanying spouses/partners within the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

1. Every invitation for an on-campus interview for a faculty position within the College will include the following statement:

"Any candidate who has a spouse/partner whose employment might affect the desirability of an appointment in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at the University of Kansas should feel free to discuss those issues with the unit director during the on-campus interview without risk of potential bias. Marital/partnership status will not be considered in the evaluation of a candidate’s qualifications.”

2. When a candidate who has been offered a position seeks a faculty appointment within the College for a spouse/partner, a copy of the spouse/partner's credentials will be requested by the Dean of the College, who will, if deemed appropriate, forward a copy of these credentials to the relevant College unit. The unit will review the credentials for assessment of their merit and their compatibility with the needs of the unit.

3. If the spouse/partner's expertise fits with the College unit's needs, then a regular interview process may ensue. Letters of recommendation may be solicited and an on-campus visit may be scheduled. For appointments beyond the rank of assistant professor the interview will include meetings with representatives of the Provost Office and the Graduate School. Credentials of all candidates for appointment with tenure will be reviewed by the College Committee on Appointments, Promotion, and Tenure.

4. The College unit will forward its recommendation on appointment (either for or against) to the Dean. The Dean will then make a decision on tendering an appointment, based on the unit's recommendation and budgetary considerations.

5. When a candidate who has been offered a position seeks a faculty appointment outside the College for a spouse/partner, the Dean of the College will request that a copy of the spouse/partner's credentials be forwarded to the Dean of the relevant School for consideration under the policies and procedures of that School.
